Things to Do This Father’s Day

Hey kids, let’s celebrate Father’s Day (17 June) in style this year. We’ve got some interesting suggestions lined up for you — from DIY gifts to fun online activities:

  • Make party hats for dad and organise your own Father’s Day Ball.
  • Make a unique stand-up picture frame to display all those treasured moments with dad.
  • Let’s improve dad’s dress sense by creating a virtual tie for his wardrobe.
  • Make a special tie card to show dad how creative you are.
  • Bring a tear to dad’s eyes by reading out some touching poems for him.

Have fun trying out these activities. But most importantly, give dad and big hug and tell him how much he means to you! Also, read about the history behind Father’s Day.

Parenting Using the STAR Approach

For all the parents out there, here is a set of guidance tools to enable you to resolve problems in the child rearing process. The STAR approach is developed by Elizabeth Crary. In her book "Love and Limits", she encourages parents to keep finding and using tools that work best for their children.

The STAR approach defines the child guidance process as:
S - Stop and Focus (on yourself, your child and the problem)
T - Think of Ideas (lots of different ideas)
A - Act Effectively (the most wonderful plan will not work if you don't do it)
R - Review, Revise and Reward (tweak the plans several times till the situation is satisfactorily resolved)

The STAR approach comes with five sets of parenting tools. Read more about these tools here.

  • Detailed information on the various crises that Singapore has faced in recent times, e.g. Bird flu, SARS.
  • Online resources on issues that concern us increasingly, e.g. civil defense, terrorism, bomb threats and chemical warfare, environmental disasters (tsunamis), etc.
