Active Adventures Marc Checkley
School's out in two weeks and already you're planning how to spend your four week break. Some of you will be exiting Singapore on a family vacation. Others will be looking forward to some decent 'me' time. For others with an adventurous streak there's many activities on offer these hols.
Firstly, don't spend your holidays cooped up inside. Get out into the fresh air and get the body moving. If you are into sports, there's a whole range of activities you can try out this June. I am not talking about regular sports like soccer or swimming but special sports that you have never tried before. Take for instance, rock climbing. Rock climbing involves scaling rock formations or man-made rock walls to reach a summit. It requires good stamina, mental endurance and is certainly a great challenge for those who fear heights. A basic beginner course will teach you basic climbing techniques, use of climbing equipment and most importantly safety measures. It certainly is an exciting sport and the sense of exhilaration at reaching the top certainly beats all the muscle aches!
It's also a great time to grab a Frisbee and form an Ultimate Frisbee team. This energizing game was created back in the late 1960s but is still relatively unknown in Singapore. Teams are usually seven-a-side and an open space is all that's required. Ultimate mixes sports like Basketball and Rugby and combines it with the fun of Frisbee throwing. It's an addictive game and anyone can do it - there are no referees and no team captains, it's just an ultimate game to play!
Moving on, or moving up, the sport of climbing trees is a new one in which the use of ropes and a harness ensure a safe ascent whichever tree you fancy. The course will teach participants the various techniques of conquering a towering tree. At the same time, they promote the appreciation of how important trees are to our ecosystem and one of their key mission statements is not to harm any trees in the climbing process. If you have done rock-climbing before and want to try something different, our tropical island has no lack of trees for you to climb!
Have you ever admired the style and passion of golfing superstar Tiger Woods? Imagine yourself on the green, swinging a club and putting the ball into the hole. There are various golf clubs around Singapore that offer beginners classes for golf-newbies. You will be introduced to how golf is played and the use of the different clubs. So put on your cap and start aiming for the farthest hole! A hole-in-one is just a putt away.
Lastly, you can keep cool these holidays while making use of all your limbs! Singapore has its very own Snow City where you can frolic with your family and friends in layers of snow. The amazing ice slope, 60 metres in length at an incline of 14 degrees paves the way for wonderful winter sports like snowboarding, skiing or simply sliding down in the special snow slides provided.
Using special technology, the snow is maintained at 400mm in depth and up to 150 tonnes of snow is used to cover the area. You can build your own snowman and pulverize your mates in snowball fights, definitely something different on an island just north of the equator. These June holidays, sun and heat is no longer an excuse to stay indoors!
Have fun, go wild and reenergize. Post your experiences at Singaporelearning.com
