STUDY AND EXAM PREPARATION STRATEGIES
How To Prepare For Test And Examinations -
Study Preparations

Prior to your test or examination, you must first inculcate good study habits and effective note taking skills which have been discussed earlier.

In preparing for your test or exam, you will need to do the following:

  • Take note of what your teacher tells you regarding topics which will be tested.
  • Organize your materials ie. notes, textbooks, assessments etc. according to what will be tested. Divide your workload into manageable chunks. Prioritize.
  • Estimate the hours you will require to review these materials.
  • Draw up a study schedule which details the study time and topics to be covered. Be realistic, do not try to cover too much in too short a time. Start revision earlier rather than leave everything to the last minute. Stick to your deadlines.
  • Get into the habit of actively studying each day. Choose a good place to study. Study for short focused blocks of time. Long periods of continuous studying is counter productive.
  • Test yourself on the materials by doing past or mock test papers. Occasionally, you may wish to study with a friend so that you can quiz each other, compare notes and discuss discrepancies.
  • Talk a break . When you feel yourself “switching off” or losing focus, change the subject you are studying or do something else. Stop studying when you are no longer productive.

How to Organize Your Study Materials

  • Create study checklists
Identify all of the material that you will be tested on - concepts, formulas, ideas etc. This checklist will enable you to break your studying into organized, manageable chunks, which should allow for a comprehensive review plan with minimal anxiety.
  • Create summary notes and "maps"
Briefly map out the important ideas of each topic within a subject and the relationships of these ideas. Summary notes should display lists and hierarchies of ideas. Mapping important facts into a visual framework will help you recall them later.
  • Record your notes
You may wish to record important portions of text so that you can study and review them with a portable player while walking or relaxing in a non-academic environment.
  • Create flashcards
for definitions, formulas, or lists that you need to have memorized - put topics on one side of the card, answers on the other. Flashcards will enable you to test your ability to not only recognize important information, but also your ability to retrieve information from scratch
