STUDY AND EXAM PREPARATION STRATEGIES
Strategies for Learning Mathematics / Science -
Strategy for Solving Science Problems

Approach every scientific problem systematically using basic process skills which you have learnt in school.

  1. Always read the math or science problem carefully and completely before beginning any workings. If you “glance” too quickly at a problem, you may misunderstand what really needs to be done to complete the problem.
  2. Whenever possible, draw a diagram. Even though you may be able to visualize the situation mentally, a hand drawn diagram will allow you to label the picture, to add lines and to view the situation from different perspectives.
  3. Know your calculator! If you must borrow a calculator, be sure that you have used that “brand” of calculator on previous occasions. If you are not familiar with how a particular calculator works, your calculations may be incorrect or you may waste precious time trying to figure out the operations.
  4. If you know that your answer to a question is incorrect, and you cannot find your mistake, start over on a clean piece of paper. Oftentimes when you try to correct a problem, you continually overlook the mistake. Starting over on a clean piece of paper will let you focus on the question, not on trying to find the error.
  5. Do not feel that you must use every number in a problem when doing your calculations. Some problems have “extra” information. These questions are testing your ability to recognize the needed information.
  6. Be sure that you are working in the same units of measures when performing calculations. If a problem involves centimetres and metres , be sure to make the appropriate conversions so that all your values are in the same unit of measure (eg. change all to centimeters).
  7. Be sure that your answer “makes sense”. For example, if a question asks you to find the length of a diagram and your answer comes out to be a negative number, this answer can’t be right. (Length is a positive concept).
  8. Show your workings or assumptions! Do not be lazy. Write down every step you took to reach the solution including calculations, diagrams, equations and statements written in complete sentences. Do not forget to add the unit of measurement if required to your answer at the end.
  9. If you get “stuck” on a particular problem, go on with the rest of the test. Oftentimes while solving a new problem, you will get an idea as to how to approach that difficult problem.
  10. If you simply cannot determine the answer to a question, make a guess that would be logical based on the information given in the problem.
