When reading your textbook or assignments, it is important to be able to identify the main idea of the text you are reading in order to comprehend and grasp the topic you are studying.
The following is a four-stage approach to reading comprehension.
1. Read the text through
Read the entire paragraph to get an idea of what it is about. Some people find it easier to read aloud or to form a picture in their mind as they read.
2. Examine
Examine each sentence in the paragraph to identify the important words that tell what the sentence is about. Write them down.
3. Decide
Reread the words you have written down for each sentence. Decide which sentence tells you the main idea of the paragraph. This is the topic sentence, the rest are supporting details.
4. Write
Repeat steps 1 to 3 for the rest of the paragraphs and then write down all the main ideas in your notebook. These are the most important points you need to know.
