Hitch Hiker's Guide to Internet - Viruses
and Other Menaces - Spamming

What is "spamming"?

Spamming means sending unsolicited and gratuitous messages, including:

· sending junk e-mail (known as Spam) and

· posting irrelevant messages to forums or newsgroups

How did they get my e-mail address?

Your e-mail addresses could have been culled from the newsgroups you participate in or e-mail directories of your profession. Some people collect e-mail addresses and sell them.

Why is "spamming" bad?

Basically, it wastes everybody's time, money and resources. There are opportunity costs.

What can I do about spam?

(1) Boycott the spammers. Do not buy anything from them.

(2) Use your real e-mail address only with people who need to correspond with you.

(3) Do not reply to spam. You will only invite more spam.
