Hitch Hiker's Guide to Internet -
Hackers and Crackers

Originally, the word "hacker" meant someone who likes to fiddle with hardware and software and is an expert in their advanced features. Now, according to popular usage, a "hacker" is someone who breaks into computer systems or telecommunications systems to cause damage, get free usage, steal money electronically or commit other crimes.

The original hackers call these sabotagers "crackers".
A phreak (= phone freak) is a cracker of telephone systems.

What can crackers do?
Anything! And you may even become a scapegoat for their illegal activities.

What can you do?

· To make it more difficult for crackers to break into your computer systems,

· Install a firewall, a piece of software that protects your computer network

· Do not install software that allows remote-control by another user.

· If you are just working off-line, pull off the network cable!
