The Internet is that and more. It is a worldwide collection of computer networks exchanging data using a common communication standard.
To put it simply, it's the world coming together and exchanging information via a common network. However, instead of coming together physically which is not possible, data exchange takes place via telephone wires, fibre-optic cables, radio links, satellite links etc.
The Internet allows users to:

exchange electronic mail (e-mail)

publish information, and update it frequently;

access multimedia information and
|
| · |
participate in forums
|
The Internet does not have a central authority, and is bound by very few rules.
