Cambodia’s most iconic symbols are the age-old temples of Angkor Wat. Due to this the nearby town of Siem Reap has become a mecca for adventurous tourists on route to the wats.
But peering beyond the temples is the everyday life of Cambodia, a country that is still very much in need of help. Here large families live in garbage dumps or near sewers.
Although Siem Reap is such a popular destination for international travellers it is still one of the poorest areas in Cambodia.
Many children have to work, they’re not given proper care and a chance to go to school. Children are sent off to bigger cities where many end up working in brothels. Child prostitution is a big issue.
Wanting to do some good for the children of Cambodia, in September I travelled to Siem Reap to volunteer with the Working For Children organisation. The charity assists orphans and the destitute and supports the country’s economic development.
My week in Siem Reap was one of the best experiences in my life. I was given the opportunity to conduct English classes, visited villagers to talk to them about the importance of education and spent a day living as they do.
The experience there was so fulfilling I am heading back there at the end of the year to again give a helping hand.
In Cambodia a little help goes a long way. Together we can make a different to the lives of these children.
